Chronic pain and obesity are major debilitating public diseases both affecting more the 1/5 of western populations and with major impact on economy and quality of life for individuals affected. While chronic pain is poorly treated, drugs like Wegovy are changing the life for many affected by obesity. Despite this, some people suffering from obesity, including elderly and people with diabetes, may have little use of drugs like Wegovy. We have developed a new drug that alleviate chronic pain in mouse models and give rise to sustained loss of fat in obese mice. This drug exerts its effect on a completely different type of molecule in the body from existing drug and consequently is likely to work differently in patients. The aim of the current project is to understand where in the body the molecule works and exactly how. This will be important to develop better drug molecules targetting this mechanism, to predict which type of patient my benefit from treatment and which side-effects may occur.
