Improved clinical management of liver cirrhosis: Targeting alcohol use, infections and earlier detection
Grant amount: DKK 11.225.000
Liver cirrhosis is the second leading cause of years of life lost in Europe. Alcohol consumption, infections and the late detection of liver disease are among the most important reasons for the high mortality risk in patients with cirrhosis. This research project will improve the clinical management of alcohol consumption and prevention of the pneumococcal infection in cirrhosis and contribute with important knowledge about effects of screening for liver disease. First, this research project will test a simple approach to deliver evidence-based management of alcohol use disorders that few patients with cirrhosis currently receive. Second, the project will establish whether screening for liver disease improves the prognosis in high-risk individuals and whether it is cost-effective. Finally, the project will investigate whether an offer of the pneumococcal vaccine can decrease morbidity and mortality in patients.
