Coronary CT Angiography: Pushing Boundaries for Improved Patient Management in Clinical Practice
Grant amount: DKK 7,842,664
Bjarne Nørgaard says: “Invasive angiography (ICA), which is the gold standard for evaluation of coronary artery disease (CAD), is associated with patient discomfort and risk of complications. These limitations have been overcome by CT angiography (CTA), which enables noninvasive accurate visualization of the arteries. The aim of my project is to assess the potential of CTA to optimize existing management strategies in subsets of patients with suspected CAD asking the following questions: can lowering cholesterol levels reestablish blood flow in narrowed arteries currently treated invasively with stents and can ICA (which is currently recommended for CAD assessment) be safely replaced by CTA before transcatheter aortic valve replacement?. Finally, we want to test whether CTA images through IT-based health provider feedback to communicate CAD risk may improve patient risk behavior and cholesterol levels. The results of these studies may have substantial favorable impact on the management of patients with CAD and valvular disease.”
