Towards precision dermatology - the proteomic characterization of inflammatory skin diseases and fungal skin infections using MS-based proteomics
Grant amount: DKK 9,949,232
Beatrice Dyring-Andersen says: “Skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and fungal infections are common and cause decreased quality of life. The molecular composition of proteins in the diseased skin has not been characterized in-depth. We have recently characterized the molecular composition of healthy human skin using so-called mass spectrometry, a technology that allows us to identify and quantify thousands of proteins within a sample. This form of research is called proteomics and it is revolutionizing medical research. In this multi-center and multidisciplinary study, we aim at characterizing the protein profile of common skin diseases and use the analyses to investigate disease pathways and mechanisms. The results will provide a broader understanding of the disease mechanisms and potentially reveal new medical targets. Finally, my project will help define whether this new technology can diagnose protein markers of skin infection and help to develop new clinical diagnostic tools.”
